Ephemera; Things that exist for a short time.

Hey, are they talking about me?

Actually this refers to collectable memorabilia, usually paper. I have some at my house, don’t you? I have an old scrapbook put together in the late 1800’s. You should see the scissor work on these advertisements. It’s very impressive ephemera.

I just know the woman who carefully cut around every tiny leaf and petal, every postcard , and glossy letter had no idea that over a hundred years later someone would be admiring her effort.

We never know our ephemera may have a longer shelf life than we could imagine. Cut carefully, paste firmly, and design well...because before we know it we’ll be gone and what we’ve left behind will be scattered.

In my hutch is a birthday card my grandmother sent me when I was 9. I bet she’d be surprised to know that I kept it all these years. On the front is a pretty blonde girl holding a basket. I like that card better than my IPod. I hope one day when my grandsons are playing with their grandsons that they’ll show them some of my ephemera, perhaps a handwritten note that was worthy of treasuring.

Hmm, I better scurry I have some pencils to sharpen.
